Dear Parent/Guardian,

This letter is to inform you of Florida State Board of Education statute related to required instruction in health education topics for students in Grades K-12. Florida Statute 1003.42 requires school districts to develop a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and developmentally appropriate K-12 instruction for various topics including suicide prevention, substance use and abuse prevention, dating violence, abstinence, resiliency, and child trafficking prevention education.

In accordance with Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.094124, Required Instruction Planning and Reporting requires school districts to annually provide a minimum of five (5) hours of data-driven instruction to students in grades 6-12 related to civic and character education and life skills education through resiliency using the health education standards, including the social, emotional, and physical effects of social media.

To meet these mandatory state requirements, our school district utilizes an online program, Navigate 360/Compass Curriculum, which contains lessons created by experts in the field and cover grade level mandated topics in an appropriate, interactive manner. Lessons are presented in an online format and may be presented either individually, in whole, or small groups. Families have access to view all lessons by logging in through the student portal under the Clever app where the Compass Curriculum app resides. It is important to note and reiterate that this requirement is mandated by the Florida State Board of Education, and these lessons will be presented to all secondary students in our district, including Dual Enrollment students and any student participating virtual learning.

Sincerely,
Mike Thorpe
Assistant Superintendent of Schools
